molded white LED light-guides from Global Lighting Technologies
(GLT), Inc. provides the brightest, most efficient, most cost-effective
backlighting solution available for today’s 3G cell phones.
Designed to meet the exacting demands of the full-color displays
used in 3G cell phones, with their high information content, internet
access, digital cameras and full-motion video capability, these
light guides provide enhanced brightness (as high as 10,000 nits),
crisper color, extreme thinness (as low as 0.65 mm), lower power
consumption and more efficient use of white LEDs, making it possible
to reduce the overall number of LEDs used per backlight.
GLT’s patented MicroLens™ pixel-based light extraction
technology provides all the manufacturing efficiencies of other
LED-based molded light extraction techniques. However, unlike other
technologies – such as chemical or laser etch and V-groove
– MicroLens™ enables full control of six key parameters:
size, shape, depth, pitch, density and angle of rotation. The result
is maximum performance, flexibility in LED placement, simplified
design, lower manufacturing costs, and significantly reduced power
consumption for longer battery life. These light guides can also
reduce the number of white LEDs required for the backlight from
2, 3 or more to only 1 or 2 in many instances. Flip or “clamshell”
phones with a monochrome sub-display on the outside of the phone
can be backlit by a single light guide that effectively illuminates
the outer display without detracting from the primary color display
on the inside.
The new MicroLens™ 3G cell phone backlights from GLT can
be custom-designed in almost any size, including 1”, 1.5”,
1.8”, and 2.0” diagonal. Pricing for the light-guide
with back reflector, frame, brightness enhancement films, diffuser,
and mask ranges from $0.95 to $1.25 in production quantities. For
