GLOBAL LIGHTING TECHNOLOGIES INTRODUCES
NEW BREAKTHROUGH IN RGB LED BACKLIGHTING FOR LCD TVs
Brecksville, OH, May 23, 2005– Global Lighting Technologies
(GLT), Inc. will be demonstrating newly-developed modular RGB LED
backlighting technology for LCD TVs at SID 2005 in Booth 1310.
Utilizing GLT’s patented light mixing wave guides and MicroLens™
technology, the new modular LCD TV backlight provides outstanding
brightness and uniformity while reducing the thickness and overall
LED count (and cost) required by other designs. In addition to its
modular design, the backlight can be scaled up to fit any size panel.
On display will be a 32-inch diagonal LCD TV backlit by six high-output
RGB LED backlight modules or “tiles”, each incorporating
a color mixing wave guide with light-emitting MicroLens™ optical
elements arranged in a pattern to provide exceptional uniformity
and color mixing.
Key advantages of GLT’s LED backlight for LCD TVs include:
- RGB LEDs for better color reproduction
- Higher output
- No mercury (fully RoHS compliant)
- Higher switching speed for improved full
motion video
- Longer life
“GLT’s LED backlight wave guide technology is thinner,
provides better color mixing, has a wider LED spacing that minimizes
thermal issues, and offers higher efficiency requiring fewer LEDs,”
said David DeAgazio, GLT’s Director of Sales Worldwide. “As
LEDs get brighter, backlights will require fewer LEDs spread over
a larger area; therefore, color mixing wave guides will become increasingly
important to LCD TV backlighting designs. Eventually, designs will
migrate to edge-lit technology requiring even fewer LEDs. GLT is
currently developing both array-based and edge-lit designs.”
In GLT’s design, the LEDs are nested in the viewing area
via recesses in the color-mixing light guide, with a separation
between the LCD and the light guide to permit an even RGB mix. The
light guides are connected to each other in a low-profile module.
“This design sets a new standard in thinness, color mixing
and in limiting the number of high-output LEDs required to backlight
an LCD TV,” noted DeAgazio. “The distribution and number
of LEDs can be adjusted to meet output and uniformity specifications,
and the total number of LEDs used in the new GLT backlight design
would be substantially lower than other LED backlighting designs,
which can require as many as 450 LEDs.”
