has introduced a new white LED backlight assembly for 7" TFT
LCDs that utilizes the company’s patented MicroLens™
molded light guide technology to provide high brightness with fewer
LEDs, reducing part count and cost.
These new backlight assemblies are fully RoHS compliant. They are
ideal for applications such as portable DVDs, as well as automotive
GPS and DVD systems and other daylight-readable displays used in
cars and minivans.
"These molded light guide assemblies provide outstanding brightness
of 3,500 to 8,000 cd/m2 (depending upon the number of
LEDs) and crisp color with excellent uniformity for mid-size LCDs,
while reducing part count and lowering the overall manufacturing
cost," said David DeAgazio, GLT’s Director of Sales Worldwide.
These custom-designed backlight assemblies are available with traditional
(phosphor) white LEDs, and an RGB version is under final development.
The key, according to GLT, is its MicroLens™ pixel-based light
extraction technology. In this process, micro-optical elements are
molded directly into a light guide, and are optimized to deliver
more collimated light, which increases the efficiency of the optical
system. By utilizing advances in LED technology combined with 3-D
optical design, proprietary MicroLens™ pattern development
software, precision manufacturing equipment and in-house tooling
design and fabrication, GLT is able to develop and produce the world’s
most efficient LCD backlights.
These custom-designed, fully integrated modules are easily installed
into the host application. GLT maintains three state-of the-art
production facilities in China and Taiwan for efficient and cost-effective
manufacturing.
Pricing for the MicroLens™ 7" LCD backlight depends
on brightness required and quantity.
A 7" TFT LCD backlight using phosphor LEDs can be purchased
in high-volume production quantities for as low as $7 - 10 each.
