GLOBAL LIGHTING TECHNOLOGIES MICROLENS
BACKLIGHTING TECHNOLOGY
OFFERS MORE BRIGHTNESS WITH FEWER LEDs
Cleveland
OH, January 2001 MicroLens molded backlighting technology
from Global Lighting Technologies, Inc.(GLT), provides uniform,
high-output backlighting with very low power. Display designers
employing standard LCD modules as well as chip-on-glass or "tab"-driven
LCDs can achieve higher brightness using fewer LEDs than with
other conventional backlighting technologies such as lightpipes
or EL.
MicroLens is an LEDÇbased technology that
offers similar initial brightness to EL, with 50,000 to 100,000
hours or more time to half brightness.
MicroLens is a recent refinement of GLTºs
patented SolidState technology. MicroLens light extraction
features are precisely molded into the panel, which maximizes
the lighting efficiency and is extremely effective for applications
where brightness, power and cost are primary design considerations.
Panel sizes as large as 1.0" W x 5" L can be backlit with
exceptional uniformity with only one LED. Since the backlights
are LED based, there is no power converter necessary. For a recent
backlight designed for Sharp (1.5" by 3.0" with 3 High Brightness
Green LEDs), the input power was 0.324 watts with a nominal output
of 60 FL at the backlight. A second backlight developed for Seiko
(the Vitrium G-4) has a viewing area of 2.5" X 3.25", 4 high brightness
white LEDs, input power of 0.432 watts and a nominal output of
53 FL at the backlightºs surface.
Single MicroLens panels can light
LCD and keypad combinations with as few as two LEDs, drastically
reducing the power required to backlight cellular phones, remote
control units or other handheld instruments.
MicroLens backlights offer a unique "transition"
area that spreads the light uniformly across the active area in
an exceptionally thin package. Mechanical holding features can
be designed into the backlight to mount chip on glass or chip
on flex LCDs or other components, reducing assembly and material
costs.
Pricing for GLTºs MicroLens backlights
ranges from $2.20 or more each for high brightness white, green
or blue LEDs in quantities of 100,000 or more; or $0.65 each or
more for backlights using standard LED technology in quantities
of 250,000 or more, depending on the application. Consult GLT
for details.
