GLOBAL LIGHTING TECHNOLOGIES SHOWING LATEST ADVANCES IN MICROLENS™ BACKLIGHTING –
FROM SMART PHONES TO TVs – AT SID 2008

Los Angeles, CA, May 20, 2008 – Global Lighting Technologies, Inc., Brecksville, OH, will be demonstrating how its patented MicroLens™ light extraction technology is enabling new advances in edge-lighting from ultra-thin backlights for the latest smart phones to LCD TV backlights that utilize fewer LEDs than any other technology. All can be seen at SID 2008 in Booth 449.

“We continually improve our MicroLens™ light guide technology to maximize the advantages provided by the latest advances in LEDs,” noted David DeAgazio, GLT’s Director of Sales Worldwide. “The result is light guides that are the world’s most efficient edge-lit backlights, with thinner packages that can backlight LCDs from 0.25” up to 50” diagonal and higher.”

At SID 2008, this includes LED-based high-brightness light guides that offer exceptional thinness – down to 0.4 mm or less – to provide the slimmest molded light guide BLUs available for backlighting LCDs and keypads/keyboards in a wide array of consumer products, including the latest generation of mobile phones and laptop and desktop PCs.

GLT will also be showing a 46” LCD TV that demonstrates how MicroLens™ edge-lighting can be extended to larger, TV-size displays. Working with Luminus Devices, Woburn, MA, supplier of PhlatLight™ LED modules, and Jabil Circuit, St. Peterburg, FL, whose expertise is in design, manufacturing, and supply chain services, GLT has developed a 46” LCD TV backlight consisting of 8 edge-lit light guides called “blades” that utilizes a total of only 8 PhlatLight LED modules, with excellent uniformity and color mixing.

Also on display will be a PC keyboard that utilizes a new, thinner, LED-based backlight that provides excellent brightness and uniformity along with the opportunity to utilize fewer LEDs, reducing the cost of the backlight. The backlight design utilizes MicroLens™ light extraction technology and GLT’s optical engineering expertise to extract more light from the backlight through to the keyboard, increasing brightness while spreading the light more uniformly. GLT selectively illuminates only those areas where light is required, increasing the light output – and brightness – at the precise points where it is needed.
