GLOBAL LIGHTING TECHNOLOGIES OFFERS SINGLE-LED
BACKLIGHTS
Cleveland, OH, January 2001 Global
Lighting Technologies, Inc. (GLT) has introduced a new backlight
technology that utilizes as few as one LED for many devices that
normally require 2, 3 or more LEDs to be properly backlit.
The company's new UniLED backlights
utilize GLT's proprietary MicroLens LED-based molded backlighting
technology, which provides uniform, high-output backlighting at
very low power.
UniLED
can provide high-brightness backlighting for a variety of portable
devices that utilize smaller size LCDs. These include cellular
phones, thermostats, and hand-held test and measurement instruments
such as the Fluke 80 Series III multi-meter (see photo)
all using just one high-output white LED.
Single LED backlights have been developed
where a 0.74" X 3.22" viewing area, using a molded-in high output
green UniLED and powered at 30 mA , had a nominal output of about
24 FL. A cellular phone backlight utilizing a side-firing, board-mounted
yellow green UniLED and powered at 30 mA had an output of about
3.2 FL. The key to these results is the MicroLens light extraction
features that are precision-molded into the UniLED panel to maximize
brightness and minimize power and cost.
Available colors include green, blue, white,
amber, orange, red and yellow-green. UniLED backlights with yellow-green
LEDs can cost as little as $0.85 each, while backlights with high
output white, green and blue LEDs can cost as little as $2.50
each in quantities of 250,000 or more. Note that pricing is dependent
on design, LED color and part geometry and that other options
and may be different than the prices quoted. Please contact GLT
for details.
