GLOBAL LIGHTING TECHNOLOGIES INTRODUCES
MICROLENS™ BACKLIGHTING ASSEMBLIES FOR
LARGE FORMAT CCFL-BACKLIT DISPLAYS

OH, May 2001 – Laptop and desktop monitors and other large
format CCFL-backlit LCDs ranging from 10.4 inch to 21 inch diagonal
in size can now realize the benefits of the unique MicroLens™
technology, , thanks to a new backlighting assembly available
from Global Lighting Technologies (GLT), Inc.
GLT's new large format CCFL (cold cathode
fluorescent lamp) backlight assembly utilizes a MicroLens backlighting
panel into which light extraction features are precision-molded,
maximizing lighting efficiency and lowering cost. GLTēs new large
format CCFL display lighting can enable a reduction in the number
of expensive optical enhancement films required, compared to other
printed methods.
For example, for a 13.3 inch diagonal laptop
monitor application, GLT's MicroLens-based backlighting assembly
is not only 25% brighter than a competitive backlight utilizing
standard construction, it can eliminate the need for one brightness
enhancement filem (BEF) and one diffuser sheet.
GLT's MicroLens-based CCFL backlight assemblies
are ideal for applications where higher brightness, lower power
and lower cost are important. The patented MicroLens technology
increases optical efficiency up to 30,000 MicroLenses per square
inch that are molded into the backlight. More brightness is achieved
with comparatively lower power consumption. In addition to the
cost advantages provided by GLT's Far East manufacturing), Lower
cost is made possible because fewer light enhancement films are
required.
Pricing for GLT's large format CCFL backlight
assemblies ranges from $18 to $28 in 12.1" to 15" diagonal sizes
in production quantities.
