NEW 15-INCH CCFL ASSEMBLY BRINGS COST EFFICIENCIES TO BACKLIGHTING OF LCD DESKTOP COMPUTER MONITORS

Brecksville, OH, May 2002 – As the flat panel LCD desktop monitor market continues to grow at a rapid rate, and TFT-LCD producers are reporting acute supply shortages of 15-inch and 17-inch monitors, Global Lighting Technologies (GLT) Inc. has introduced a new SolidState™ CCFL backlight assembly for 15-inch desktop TFT (thin film transistor) LCD monitors.

Ideal for high volume consumer applications such as flat panel LCD monitors for desktop computer systems, the assembly utilizes a backlighting panel incorporating GLT's proprietary MicroLens™ technology, through which light extraction features are precision-molded into the panel, maximizing lighting efficiency and minimizing cost. Up to 30,000 optical features per square inch can be individually customized to optimize the light ray angles, particularly when using light management films to enhance brightness.

The light produced by MicroLens™ technology is more specular than with other backlighting technologies. Due to the dramatic increase in efficiency - including brightness increases of up to 25% - a reduction in the number of light management films required may be achieved, lowering cost.

With its extensive capabilities in optical design, rapid prototyping, mold design and production (three facilities with a total of over 360,000 square feet, or 33,444 m²), Global Lighting Technologies can supply the 15-inch backlighting assembly in high volumes (currently 120k/month expandable to 450k/month), with quick delivery in tune with customer production schedules.
