MicroLens™
FOR LED-BASED BACKLIGHTING
INSERT-MOLDED
LEDs
Molding the LEDs directly into the
light guide (a patented GLT feature) maximizes the amount
of light entering the panel by eliminating losses associated
with air gaps. Insert molding also eliminates the alignment
issues that can result from board mounted LEDs that
are abutted to molded light guide products. Insert-molded
LEDs result in a rugged and optically aligned package
that keeps them solidly in place while the backlight
and LCD are assembled. Combined with LCD glass holding
features, the backlight can also serve as a mounting
device for the LCD and backlight into the host application.
In small displays (1.5" or less
wide), as few as one LED can be employed to achieve
desirable light output in many applications. In mid-sized
displays MicroLens™ will reduce the number of
LEDs required to achieve acceptable results, saving
power and cost.
MicroLens™
– HARNESSING ADVANCES IN LED TECHNOLOGY
In recent years there has been significant
improvement in the output of LEDs. Display designers
have been able to utilize LEDs of unprecedented efficiency
in nearly any color. These new LEDs are available in
eye pleasing colors including white, blue, and green,
and offer significantly higher brightness levels when
compared to other standard LEDs. LED reduction is important
since the new LED technology is not only high output,
but high cost as well.
By combining the latest high output
LEDs, GLT's patented light guide design, and the efficiency
of MicroLens™, the number of LEDs required for
a given application can be significantly reduced, in
some cases to as few as one.
MicroLens™ UniLED backlights
can replace 2, 3 or more LEDs with only one high-output
LED (white, blue, or green) for applications such as
cellular phones, thermostats and hand-held test and
measurement equipment.

FOR CCFL BACKLIGHTING

CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp)
backlit LCDs require a light diffusion plate that is
butted against the edge of the light guide and is held
by either a plastic tray assembly or a reflective foil
tape at the edge of the backlight assembly. For color
LCDs, most CCFL backlights will add brightness enhancement
films (BEFs) to improve the brightness of the display.
These films require special handling and are expensive.
In small to mid-sized displays, BEF films can be optional
and MicroLens technology will typically offer
increased brightness, particularly when compared to
printed, laser and chemical etched lightguide technologies.
In large format displays
(10.4 inch diagonal and larger), BEF films are very
common. With all other factors remaining the same, the
use of GLT MicroLens™ backlight offers the opportunities
to reduce the number of top films (diffusers and BEFs)
required.
